How to keep score in Uno
In Uno, the first player to get rid of all their cards wins the round and scores the points for every card left in the other players' hands. Number cards are worth their face value, action cards 20 and wild cards 50. The first player to 500 wins.
- Players
- 2 to 10
- Who wins
- First to 500
- Each round
- Only the player who goes out scores
- Cards
- 108 in the deck, 7 each to start
What each card is worth
When a player goes out, add up the cards left in everyone else's hands. The player who went out scores the lot, and everyone else scores 0 for the round.
| Card | Points |
|---|---|
| Number cards, 0 to 9 | Face value |
| Draw Two | 20 |
| Reverse | 20 |
| Skip | 20 |
| Wild | 50 |
| Wild Draw Four | 50 |
If the last card played is a Draw Two or a Wild Draw Four, the next player still draws the cards, and they count in the total.
When the game ends
After each round, add the points to the winner's running total. The first player to reach 500 wins. Only one player scores each round, so two players can't reach 500 together.
If you'd rather not keep score at all, play single rounds: the first player out wins.
The other way to score: lowest wins
The rules give a second way to score. After each round, every player adds up the cards left in their own hand and writes that down. The player who went out writes 0.
When one player's total reaches 500, the game ends and the player with the lowest total wins. The card values stay the same.
Penalties that cost you points
These rules don't score points themselves, but every card they add to your hand counts at the end of the round.
- Forgetting to say Uno: if someone catches you with one card before the next player starts their turn, draw two.
- Wild Draw Four challenge: you may only play it when you have no card of the colour in play. If you're challenged and you had one, you draw the four instead. If you didn't, the challenger draws six.
A scoring example
Four players, three rounds. In round 1 Ana went out. Ben held a 7 and a Draw Two (27), Cleo a Wild and a 3 (53), and Dev a 5, a 9 and a Skip (34).
| Round | Ana | Ben | Cleo | Dev |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 114 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 2 | 0 | 0 | 86 | 0 |
| 3 | 75 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Total | 189 | 0 | 86 | 0 |
Round 1: 27 + 53 + 34 = 114 for Ana. In round 2 Cleo went out and scored Ana's 2 and 8 (10), Ben's Wild Draw Four and Reverse (70) and Dev's 6: 86. In round 3 Ana went out again and scored Ben's 4, Cleo's Skip and 1 (21) and Dev's 0 and Wild (50): 75.
Scored the lowest-wins way, each player keeps their own cards instead: Ana 10, Ben 101, Cleo 74 and Dev 90. Either way, Ana is in front.

Questions
How many points is a Wild card in Uno?
50. A Wild Draw Four is also 50, and Draw Two, Reverse and Skip cards are 20 each.
How many points do you need to win Uno?
500. Only the player who goes out scores each round, so the first to reach 500 wins outright.
Do you count your own cards or everyone else's in Uno?
Everyone else's: the player who goes out scores the cards left in the other hands. In the lowest-wins way, everyone writes down their own cards, and when someone reaches 500 the lowest total wins.
What happens if the last card played is a Draw Two?
The next player still draws two cards, and they count in the points the winner scores. The same goes for a Wild Draw Four.
What is the penalty for not saying Uno?
Draw two cards, if someone catches you before the next player starts their turn.
How much are number cards worth in Uno?
Their face value, so a 7 is 7 points and a 0 is worth nothing.
